Tuniq Tower 120 was for long time one of the best cpu coolers.Tuniq pushed the limits even further and developed the Tower 120 Extreme, a cpu cooler with smokey aluminium fins and five heatpipes. The air circulation is ensured by a 12cm MFDB fan with blue leds that makes a really nice optical result. So will the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme beat the competition?

The main features of  Tower 120 Extreme are the unique designed fins with a wave shape that make make the cooler look really nice, and when combined with the 12cm MFDB fan with blue leds the result is simply awesome.

It has the core contact technology(also known as HDT), with five heatpipes in total, three are 8mm in diameter and the other two are 6mm.The heatpipes are also chromed and this helps in the overall nice look of the cooler.

The MFDB(Magnetic Fluid Dynamic Bearing) fan is also a really nice high performance fan that will leave everyone satisfied.

At last the Tower 120 Extreme has a wide compatibility range supporting LGA775,LG1366 and AM2/3 sockets!

Let's move to the features and specifications!

All data is taken from Tuniq website:

Overview

The performance king has returned!  The much praised Tuniq Tower 120 has gone through a radical redesign and not only looks cooler but its performance has been boosted.  The unique wave-like fins display a tremendous visual impact and increase the air-contact area for an unprecedented thermal performance.  The nickel-plated surface combined with the LED fan creates a breath taking visual effect!

To ensure that the maximum cooling performance is obtained, we have also included our highest performing thermal compound, the TX-3. Furthermore, our unique adjustable fan controller places the control in your hands!

Inside we find an accessory box and the cooler.

The Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme is well protected in transparent plastic.

Let's have a closer look at Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme!

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme has a really nice design as we can see.

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme

From the top we can see the fan cover with the Tuniq logo.

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme

We can see the the wave fin design which gives a really nice optical result. Also the fins at the sides are closed in order to have airflow concentrated at the center.

From here we can see once more the fins, and how they look. Also the heatpipes are visible.

The base has some fins on top in order to increase performance.

The base has a protective sticker.

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme

We can see that the lapping is not mirror like, but the base is perfectly straight.

Here is Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme with the fan removed.

The fan is MFDB, 12cm with blue leds.

Here we can see the product sticker.

When we power the fan, the blue leds make Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme even better!

Let's move on the installation!

Installation is very easy and the manual very nice. First of all we have to place the four screws at the packplate and secure them with the four nuts.

After this we place the rubber washers.

Then we position the backplate.

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme is secured with four spring loaded thumb screws, we tighten them and Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme is ready!

Here is how it looks installed.

From another point of view.

Nothing is touching at the MB heatsinks and there is plenty of room!

Now we can move at the most important part...Testing!

Heatsink testing methodology

  • Each heatsink test consists of two parts, Real Test and Synthetic Test.
  • Real Testing is performed in a real system, while Synthetic is done using methods that simulate thermal loads.
  • Stable thermal loads are used in order to have accurate results, more specifically thermal load is produced by power resistors.
  • The thermal load wattage is 30,60,90,120,150,180,210 watts. This covers a really wide range of processors and also overclocked states at wattages of 180 and 210 watts.
  • Temp readings are taken from a sensor inside a copper plate that is the exact size of the processor tested in order to simulate the cpu with the best way.
  • For reading the temperature I am using a high sensitivity digital multimeter.
  • Thermal paste used in each test is Noctua NT-H1 because it has very quick break-in time.
  • The copper piece that simulates the processor is not perfectly sanded, because the actual processor heatspreaders are never mirror polished. This happens again to have as accurate results as possible.
  • Sound pressure levels are measured with a high sensitivity digital sound pressure meter, from 20cm away of the cooler inside a sound proof box to eliminate any external noise of echo.

In order to have more clear results Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme will be compared with:

  1. Intel Stock cooler
  2. Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme(with the fan of Tower 120 Extreme)

TESTING PART 1 - Real Testing

System used for the test

TESTING PART 2 - Synthetic Testing

Stable thermal loads are used in order to test the cooler at a wide variety of thermal loads, this test simulates cpu states from Idle to Overclocking

TESTING PART 3 - Sound Pressure Level

Tuniq indeed made a strong comeback at high end cpu coolers with  Tower 120 Extreme. It does not only perform remarkably well, but it also has a really nice appearance. The smokey finish, the wave shaped fins and the blue led fan together provide an eye candy for your system!

From the performance aspect, Tower 120 Extreme has nothing to fear from its competitors since it has similar performance with Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme, one of the best air coolers in the market.

It can be considered also a value cooler, since it includes a fan and has multi compatibility unlikely other coolers that need to purchace a fan seperatelly. Also the design is a very big advantage that will attract many people.

Noise was high at full speed, but this is normal for a fan spinning at 2000rpm.At lower fan speed acoustic noise is low, but it would be nice to have even lower fan speed setting with the included fan speed controller for the silence lovers.

Pros

  • Performance
  • Rich bundle
  • Appearance
  • Low noise at low fan speed

Cons

  • None

"Tower 120 Extreme is given the design award for its eye catching design, and the recommended award for not anly looking nice but also performing as well!!!"
