FSP has been designing psu's for long time, and had some really good models.Today we will have a look at Everest 80 plus series, and specifically at the 500w model, which is intended to be a high quality and efficient psu at a low price.





Let's have a look at the features and specifications!

The packaging is very nice, with colourful background, and a transparent window in the middle that allows us to see the psu.

The Everest 80 Plus 500w has blue color, and gold fan guard.The cables are sleeved.

Let's have a look at the inside!

Everest 80 Plus 500w seems quite tidy from the inside, with sufficient heatsinks for its wattage.

Transient filtering is not the best I have seen, it has 2 c-capacitors,1 x-capacitor and a ferrite ring.I would expect something more since sufficient filtering is very critical.

The fuse is inside a protective cover,so if anything occurs and blows it won't damage other components.

The main capacitor is Teapo, 390μF rated at 85 degrees. Not the best, but it is a respectable branded capacitor.

Secondary caps are not made by the same manufacturer, this is something I don't like at all.Some are Teapo, and some CapXon or crapXon as they are used to be called.

Internal build quality seemed to be good when I first opened it, but many components are seperated with tape and they are touching each other.So build quality is simply average.

The 12cm fan is made by ADDA, known for the high quality of its products.

Let's move to the testing!

Power supply testing methodology

  • For testing power supplies I am using a homemade tester that consists of multiple power resistors and amperometers.
  • This allows me to control with pin point accuracy the exact load at each rail
  • One more reason to test psu's with this method is that high power power supplies(800+ watts) are very difficult to be tested with a normal system.With the tester I am using I can achieve loads of up to 1800 watts.
  • Readings are taken with a high sensitivity digital multimeter, and if required a voltage drop diagram is made.
  • In order for a test to be considered successful the psu has to be able to perform it for 2 hours.
  • Noise levels are recorded from 10cm away from the back of the psu(air exhaust) 

TESTING Part 1st (Real testing)

At this part the FSP Everest 80 Plus 500w will be tested in real conditions, in my pc that was built for this reason.


  • CPU:Intel core i7-950 @ stock speed
  • Mobo:EVGA X58 Sli
  • VGA:Dual MSI GTX [email protected] Sli(Only one vga was used for this review)
  • Memory:Adata 6Gb kit
  • HDD: 4x Seagate 500Gb

This system is able to draw about 500w, so it will push the Everest 80 Plus 500w to its limits.All reading were taken with a high sensitivity digital multimeter.In order to achive max load several instances of Orthos were running,with Furmark to stress the vga cards.Below we can see the results.





The Everest 80 Plus 500w remained very silent at idle, but at load the noise was high.This is normal because a 500w psu is not intended for a computer like this and is really pushed to its limits.The psu had some voltage drop, but not anything to worry about.


TESTING Part 2nd(Synthetic testing)

At this part my homemade psu tester is used.This allows me to know the exact load of each rail.This is very usefull because I can measure the efficiency and also see if the psu can really provide the specified wattage.

Please note that synthetic testing is much more difficult for the power supply, and this means that it has more voltage drop than with the same load at a real system.

Everest 80 Plus 500w was able to withstand 500w load for 2 hours.The noise was high, and there was a significant voltage drop, but it was working!After the first hour of 100% load, the voltages dropped a bit, this is a sign of poor cooling, but never dropped to a critical level.Also efficiency is above 80% at all loads!








Everest 80 Plus 500w is a middle range psu that can provide 500w of continuous power, but with some voltage drop.So it is not recommended for high end systems.It has high efficiency, above 80% at all loads and remains silent at loads under 50%.Efficiency is above 80% at all loads, but the internal build quality could be better(secondary caps of various brands is not good sign)
